On the Walls in Public Places: Stanwood and Camano Island
Camano Arts Association volunteer members work with six area public locations to hang art. The program has many benefits for both the artists and the community. While the art visually enhances these sites, it also educates the public about the variety and richness of creativity in our local environment. The program offers artists of every skill level an opportunity to exhibit their work.
Members and non-member local artists are invited to bring their art for these informal exhibitions. Each location has it's own tailor made program designed for it's specific needs. Art drop-off and pick-up dates are announced at CAA monthly meetings.
Members of the arts association with interest in planning and hanging exhibitions, developing curatorial skills and getting involved with the community are invited to join the CAA Public Art committee.
This is a growing and evolving program.
Venues
The lobbies of our senior and community centers are filled with art on loan from area artists. We change the art in these venues twice a year. These are group exhibitions with one piece from each artist.
Small exhibitions with about a dozen works by local artists are hung in the Camano Island elementary school hallways during the school year. Mid school year, the art is switched from one school to the other. Artists are invited to exhibit one piece of art in each school.
Participating artists are asked to write one sentence about the inspiration of their art piece. The inspirations are displayed as part of the exhibition. Teachers may visit the exhibition with their classes and discuss the art. Some of the classes choose to write about the exhibition. In past years, the teachers have sent CAA wonderful packages filled with the children's responses to the art.
Four Springs Preserve
Part of the Island County Park system, the Four Springs House and Meadow Room are available for private rental for meetings and weddings during most of the year. Several times each year, large community events are held there. The buildings are surrounded by a beautiful 50-acre preserve. The grounds are open to the public during regular park hours.
The house is filled with art on loan from local artists. Group exhibitions generally have a nature theme.
The CAA was awarded a grant from The Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation to purchase an art hanging system and track lighting for the Meadow Room. Special exhibitions can now be held in this room.
An annual CAA Members Exhibition will be opening at Four Springs the weekend of November 2, 3, and 4, 2007. This event will be open to the public.
Stanwood Chamber of Commerce
Small group exhibitions with community themes are hung in this office, which is shared by the Stanwood Chamber and the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation. CAA works with these groups to bring about six exhibitions a year. The themes coincide with community events.
Street Banner Program
Local artists have created street banners which are hung along roads and in parking areas on Camano Island and in Stanwood.
